This morning, at the very beginning of our school day, quite a bit of smoke entered the O.D. Speer Elementary building. Not immediately knowing where the source of the smoke was coming from, the Students and Teachers promptly evacuated to the Granville Stuart building under the direction of Principal Chrisman after the Fire Department was summoned.
In a matter of only a few minutes, the Fire Department promptly arrived and after a thorough inspection determined that there was no fire in the school building. The smoke was coming from a properly permitted fire close to town and the wind picked it up and blew it in the school's direction.
The evacuation of Speer, migration to Granville and return to Speer went very smoothly and is a good reminder to us of how important fire drills are. Kudos to our kids and school faculty for performing so well in an initially uncertain situation and thank you to the Deer Lodge Fire Department for their prompt response.
